- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and heat a pot of water until very hot, just below a simmer.
- In a mixing bowl, combine 3/4 cup of granulated sugar, flour, 1/4 cup of cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour the batter into a lightly greased 2-quart ceramic dish or a 9-inch square baking pan and spread it evenly.
- In a small bowl, mix the remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar, brown sugar, and remaining 1/4 cup cocoa, then sprinkle evenly over the batter.
- Pour the hot water over the top of the cocoa-sugar mixture without stirring.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes in a glass dish or 30-35 minutes in a metal pan, until the center is almost set. Let stand for 15 minutes before serving.
- Spoon the cake into bowls, ensuring you include the fudgy sauce from the bottom, and serve with vanilla ice cream if desired.
