Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound spaghetti or your favorite pasta
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cans (28 ounces each) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • q.s. fresh basil leaves, for garnish to taste

  • Colander for draining the pasta
  • Cheese grater for the Parmesan

Method
 

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente.
  2. Drain the pasta and set it aside. Reserve a cup of pasta water for later use.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion. Sauté until the onions are translucent and the garlic is fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  4. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, salt, black pepper, dried basil, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir everything together and let it simmer for about 20 minutes.
  5. Add the cooked pasta to the sauce and toss until the pasta is well coated. Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves. Serve hot.
