  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme (fresh or dried)
  • q.s. Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese or Gruyère
  • 4 burger buns
  • q.s. fresh parsley, chopped for garnish

Equipment

  • Skillet or Grill

  • Knife and Cutting Board
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Burger Buns

Method

  1. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat, and add the thinly sliced onions.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until caramelized.
  3. Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for another 5 minutes.
  4. Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Shape the ground beef into 4 equal patties and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Cook the patties on the grill for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness.
  7. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty and cover to melt the cheese.
  8. Toast the burger buns lightly if desired, then assemble the burgers with the cheesy patty and the caramelized onion mixture on top.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider deglazing the onion pan with a splash of red wine before adding the beef broth. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven rather than the microwave to keep the buns from getting soggy. Experiment with different cheeses like blue cheese or cheddar for unique flavor combinations.
