- Start by slicing the tomato and setting it aside. Evenly slice the bread and butter one side of each slice.
- Spread Dijon mustard lightly on the unbuttered side of two slices of bread, if using.
- Place a slice of cheese on the unbuttered side of two bread slices.
- Add three slices of ham on top of each cheese layer.
- Arrange the tomato slices evenly over the ham, and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Top with the remaining cheese slices and place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side facing out.
- Heat a skillet or panini press over medium heat. If using a skillet, press down gently with a spatula while cooking.
- Cook for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy, and the cheese starts melting.
- Optionally, cover the skillet with a lid to speed up the melting process.
