  • 1 pound penne pasta
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • q.s. grated Parmesan cheese (optional) for serving
  • q.s. fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Equipment

  • Large pot with a lid
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Chopping board and knife
  • Colander if draining pasta separately

Method

  1. Start by heating the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Pour the water and crushed tomatoes into the pot. Stir well to combine.
  4. Add the dried oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Stir to blend the spices into the tomato mixture. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the penne pasta to the pot. Stir gently to ensure the pasta is fully submerged in the sauce.
  6. Cook according to the pasta package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente, stirring occasionally.
  7. Once the pasta is cooked, remove the pot from the heat and let it sit for a couple of minutes to thicken slightly. Serve hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves.
