- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 15x10 inch jelly roll pan.
- In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
- One at a time, add the eggs to the mixture, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting by beating the softened butter until creamy, then gradually adding in the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with the milk.
- Once the cake is done, let it cool for a few minutes, then spread the frosting evenly over the top, adding pecans if desired.
